Answer engine

An answer engine is an AI system such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Gemini that responds to a question with a written answer rather than a list of links. It draws on sources it has crawled or retrieved, composes a reply, and usually cites only a handful of them. Because it names so few sources, being one of them is the whole game.
